A lot of fearmongering in the media has Americans concerned that all our goods are imported from China. But is that really true? GOOD’s new business editor, Tim Fernholz, calls bullshit:

While Chinese goods seem ubiquitous, especially given America’s economic woes, the reality is that imports from the country are a relatively small part of the economy: A total of 88.5 percent of consumer spending in the United States is on items made here, with only 2.7 percent spent on “Made in China” goods, according to new research from the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco:

Oh yeah, and this, “As of 2010, the United States was the second-largest manufacturer in the world, and the No. 3 agricultural nation. But agriculture is now so mechanized that only about 2 percent of American workers make a living as farmers. American manufacturing looks to be heading down the same path.” 1

I have watched this everyday since Friday. I haven’t watched any news like this since Hurricane Katrina, and even that was unbearable.

What I have seen is actual news being reported with a great deal of context. The news has an international outlook, and their interviews with American diplomats have been pointed and very enjoyable.

The questions that I have coming from this current news watching spree are why our domestic news outlets are unable to get my viewership. Obviously, there are not events like revolutions to always be covering domestically, but is our model as news as entertainment sustainable?
